Results of Social Security Essay Competition
16 February 2010

The Social Security Board announces the results of the Essay Competition which was staged towards the end of 2009. This competition was launched on 12th October 2009 and essays were submitted by the 9th November 2009.

The topics were as follows:

·       Primary school students - My country benefits from Social Security in many ways.

·       High schools students - Social Security’s role in stimulating the economy.

·       Tertiary level students - Reform: How will social security survive over the next thirty years?

A team of judges was assembled comprising current and, or, former long serving educators, some of whom have operated as CSEC examiners. They gave consideration to the three different categories under which the competition was held.

At the end of a series of marking exercises the following results have been determined: For the Primary School level, the winners are:

·       Keannie Browne of the Ivor Walters Primary School on Nevis, First Place

·       K-Jel Smithen of the St. Thomas’ Primary School on Nevis, Second Place, and

·       D. C. Matthew Cozier of the Ivor Walters Primary School on Nevis, Third Place

For the Secondary School level, the winners are:

·       Jael Gumbs of the Washington Archibald High School on St. Kitts, First Place

·       Guevelle Pemberton of the Basseterre High School on St. Kitts, Second Place, and

·       Candice Green of the Washington Archibald High School on St. Kitts, Third Place

It was not possible to determine a result for the tertiary level competition as there was an inadequate response from students in that category.

The Social Security Board would like to thank the Ministries of Education on both St. Kitts and Nevis, the various schools in the Federation, the parents of the children who participated and the marking team for their collective efforts in ensuring the success of the competition. In the mean time efforts are being pursued to have the winning essays video-taped for airing on television. The Board looks forward to the continued cooperation of all concerned in future initiatives organized by Social Security.
